Under-river tunnel’s 2nd section towed to place in town

The second section of the Thu Thiem Tunnel in Ho Chi Minh City was towed from Dong Nai Province for placement under the Saigon River on Monday. The section was safely tugged from the casting basin in Dong Nai’s Nhon Trach District to its place on the river, in the middle of District 1 and District 2. (Photo: SGGP) The 25,000-ton structure was towed by four tugboats through 22 kilometers along the rivers of Nha Be and Saigon to the construction site – My Canh Area in District 1. It will be installed and connected to the first section Tuesday, April 6. The first section of the Thu Thiem Tunnel was installed successfully on March 8. The two remaining tunnel sections will be towed to the city on May 4-5 and June 4-5. The three-lane Thu Thiem Tunnel linking districts 1 and 2 is slated to open to traffic next year, allowing vehicles to travel at 60 kilometers per hour.
